Hi, I'm a Producer...can you see it in my eyes?

VS

So I finished my set at the Falcon and the homie was in the mood to chat about music. I'm always game for that. We get to chatting and I find out this dude is a musician(you know with training and shit). Anyway he goes on about all the 'producers' who don't know music theory. I am a supporter of music theory, learn as much as you need to or not???
But when he said "these aren't producers (including me of course), Quincy is a producer", I had to back up off of it and put my thinking cap on. I thought about the use of that word producer...hmmmm. 'I mean I may not be producing music, but I'm producing something right???' I thought. I am really clueless about this one, I personally feel like you can be a producer and a musician like Q or just a plain old beat producer like idunno, Premiere???. Gimme somebody with no musical training who has some longevity....
I mean movie producers produce film right???
I mean a production is still a production right???
YEah so I am hoping you guys can weigh in on this one for me. How do you break it down???

I have never boasted that I was a 'musician' but I definately feel like I am a 'Producer' of beats and songs.

I mean what is music theory anyway??? Do we need to start putting things in the wrong order for self justification? I know that if I went to school for music and some dude just popped up bang on a computer and calling themselves a musical artist, I would feel a bit pissed or have the need the justify my musical direction. The problem with that is, who came first? the dude on his Harp producing melodies by ear or the dude in the wig writing a concerto????
